The Difference Between Famous Roads and Great Roads

The Difference Between Famous Roads and Great Roads

Not every great road has a name riders recognise.

Some of the best riding in 2025 happened on roads without famous signs, crowded viewpoints or souvenirs waiting at the top. Roads that simply flowed. Roads that let riders settle into themselves and enjoy the experience of riding.

For our 2026 European motorcycle tours, we continue balancing the iconic with the understated.

Because greatness is often quieter than reputation.

Famous Motorcycle Roads Earn Their Reputation

There are certain roads and mountain passes that appear on almost every list of the best motorcycle roads in Europe.

And often, there’s a very good reason for that.

Dramatic climbs, tight hairpins, incredible viewpoints and the satisfaction of finally riding somewhere you’ve seen in photographs for years can make these roads an important part of a European motorcycle tour.

There’s something special about reaching a road you already know by name and experiencing it for yourself.

But famous doesn’t automatically mean best.

Sometimes the Best Road Is the One You Weren’t Expecting

Ask riders about the highlight of a motorcycle tour and the answer isn’t always the famous mountain pass they had been looking forward to.

Sometimes it’s a road they had never heard of.

It might be a quiet stretch through the mountains, a sweeping road following a river or a series of bends through open countryside where everything just seems to work.

The surface is good. The traffic disappears. The bends flow naturally into one another.

You stop thinking about where you’re going and simply enjoy getting there.

Those roads rarely come with a famous name attached to them, but they can become some of the most memorable miles of the entire trip.

What Actually Makes a Great Motorcycle Road?

A great motorcycle road doesn’t need to be extreme.

It doesn’t need the highest mountain, the tightest hairpins or the biggest viewpoint.

For us, it’s often about flow.

The best roads give you time to settle into a rhythm. They offer enough variety to keep the riding interesting without constantly demanding something from you.

Add beautiful scenery, good road surfaces and quieter traffic, and sometimes an unassuming road can deliver a better riding experience than the destination everyone has travelled hundreds of miles to see.

Looking Beyond the Bucket List

Bucket-list roads have their place.

If there’s a legendary European mountain pass you’ve always wanted to ride, finally reaching it can be one of the highlights of your trip.

But motorcycle touring in Europe becomes much more interesting when you stop treating it as a checklist.

There are thousands of miles of roads between the famous destinations, and those miles matter.

That’s why we put as much thought into the journey between the headline locations as we do the destinations themselves.

A road doesn’t need to be famous to deserve a place on one of our routes.

It just needs to be worth riding.

Finding the Right Balance

Our approach to planning motorcycle tours in Europe isn’t about avoiding the iconic roads.

It’s about getting the balance right.

We want riders to experience the mountain passes and roads they’ve dreamed about, but we also want to introduce them to places they might never have discovered on their own.

Sometimes that means leaving the obvious route behind.

It might mean choosing a quieter road running parallel to the main tourist route or taking a longer way around because we know the riding is better.

Those decisions can transform a day on the bike.

Roads You Remember for How They Felt

One of the interesting things about motorcycle touring is how differently you remember roads afterwards.

You might remember the name of the famous pass, but the road you find yourself talking about over dinner could be the one nobody had heard of that morning.

You remember the rhythm of it.

The sequence of bends. The scenery. The lack of traffic. The moment the road opened up ahead of you and everything seemed to fall into place.

Sometimes you might not even remember its number.

But you remember exactly how it felt to ride.

Our Approach for 2026

That’s something we’re carrying into our 2026 guided and self-guided motorcycle tours in Europe.

We’ll continue riding the iconic roads when they deserve their reputation.

But we’ll also continue looking beyond them.

Because a great motorcycle tour isn’t built by joining together as many famous road names as possible. It’s built around days of riding that flow, landscapes worth experiencing and roads that make you want to keep going.

Sometimes those roads have names recognised by riders around the world.

Sometimes they’re little more than a line on the map.

The famous roads give you stories you expected to tell. The great roads give you stories you didn’t see coming.
