Discovering France on Two Wheels

There’s something magical about exploring a country on a motorcycle. The wind in your face, the freedom of the open road, and the ability to venture off the beaten path at a moment’s notice. When that country is France, with its diverse landscapes, rich history, and world-renowned cuisine, you have the recipe for an unforgettable adventure. Join me as I recount my recent motorbike tour through the French countryside.

Day 1-2: Paris to the Loire Valley

Our journey began in the City of Light, Paris. After a quick visit to the iconic Eiffel Tower, we mounted our bikes and headed southwest towards the Loire Valley. The transition from urban sprawl to rolling countryside was gradual but breathtaking.
Our first major stop was the Château de Chambord, a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture. The sight of this magnificent castle emerging from the morning mist is something I’ll never forget. We spent the afternoon exploring the château’s 440 rooms and intricate gardens before continuing to the charming town of Amboise for the night.

Day 3-4: Through the Vineyards of Bordeaux

Leaving the Loire Valley behind, we rode through the heart of French wine country. The route to Bordeaux took us past endless rows of meticulously maintained vineyards. We couldn’t resist stopping at a few small, family-owned wineries for tastings (in moderation, of course – safety first!). In Bordeaux itself, we parked our bikes and spent a day exploring the city’s stunning 18th-century architecture and indulging in some of the world’s finest wines. The sunset view of the Garonne River from the Place de la Bourse was simply unforgettable.

Day 5-6: The Pyrenees Adventure

From Bordeaux, we headed south towards the Pyrenees Mountains. The ride became more challenging and exhilarating as we navigated the winding mountain roads. We spent a night in the picturesque village of Saint-Lary-Soulan, a popular ski resort in winter that transforms into a hiker’s paradise in summer. The next day, we tackled the famous Col du Tourmalet, one of the most renowned climbs in the Tour de France. The views from the top were worth every hairpin turn.

Day 7-8: Mediterranean Dreams in Provence

Leaving the mountains behind, we rode east towards Provence. The landscape changed dramatically, with purple lavender fields and olive groves replacing the rugged peaks of the Pyrenees. We based ourselves in the charming town of Aix-en-Provence, taking day trips to nearby attractions. A highlight was riding along the stunning Corniche des Crêtes, a coastal road offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

Day 9-10: The Final Stretch to the French Riviera

Our tour concluded with a ride along the glamorous French Riviera. We cruised through Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and finally to Nice, where we reluctantly returned our trusty bikes.
As I sat on the Promenade des Anglais, watching the sun set over the Mediterranean, I reflected on our incredible journey. In just ten days, we had experienced the diverse beauty of France – from historic châteaux and world-class vineyards to rugged mountains and sun-soaked beaches.
A motorbike tour through France isn’t just a vacation; it’s an immersive experience that engages all your senses and leaves you with memories to last a lifetime. So, rev up your engine and discover the heart of Europe on two wheels. The adventure of a lifetime awaits!

Travel Tips:

  • Plan your route in advance, but be flexible. Some of the best experiences come from spontaneous detours.
  • Pack light and invest in good quality, weatherproof gear.
  • Brush up on French road signs and rules before your trip.
  • Consider renting a bike with GPS navigation.
  • Always prioritize safety. Take breaks when needed and never drink and ride.

Bon voyage et bonne route!
